Hello. I am Amy Rojo. Some of you may know my sister Ellen Sarver, Sylvania, OH, and her son Charlie. Some may not. If you have not had the chance to meet them, let me introduce you. Ellen is my big sis., and a hospice nurse. She has helped so many people/families transition with love, patience, kindness, lots of knowledge, and many years of experience. She is the most humble and kind person you would ever have the good fortune of knowing. One day, a little baby came into her hospice care. He had a host of things that had gone wrong with his in-utero development. The doctors did not have a good prognosis at all and he was sent to Hospice. At one point Ellen was told he would most likely never walk, talk, hear, see, think or even have a sense of humor. He would have no “quality of life”. He didn’t deteriorate in Hospice though. Ellen held him, fed him, rocked him as did his other nurses. He began to improve a little. His birth parents weren’t able to care for him. So…….. Ellen, after a bit of red tape and paperwork, adopted him, took him home, and named him “Charlie”. Charlie has experienced so much love, patience, therapies (countless therapies), and stimulation in the form of life experiences through my sister, he began to well…….thrive (as best he could with all his issues – medical and developmental. He has surpassed everyone’s expectations. Everyone’s, that is, except Ellen’s. Ellen has given Charlie such a wonderful gift of life, through her own sacrifice. She will tell you it is Charlie who has given her the gift of living in the moment, happiness, joy and love. In reality, it has not been without heartache and struggle, both emotionally and financially, but Ellen has worked so hard and tirelessly, to make it work and make the best life for Charlie. Her love is inspirational. Let me tell you a little about Charlie. Charlie loves life! His personality – the one doctors said he’d never have – is larger than life. He’s really quite amazing. He is joyous, happy, curiously inquisitive. He has worked so very hard to overcome so much. It took him longer than most, but against all odds, he did indeed learn to walk, talk, potty train, ride a bike, joke around, dance, sing, play sports, participate in Special Olympics graduate from High School, and many other things ……. all the things the doctors said he’d never do. Charlie is remarkable! He has been in and out of the hospital countless times in his 18 years. Sometimes, the outcome was scary and questionable, but he has prevailed though it all. In the past several years, Charlie has struggled on and off, with severe pancreatitis. He is now an insulin dependent diabetic which is sometimes difficult to control. He has had to endure unfathomable pain. Currently, Charlie is hospitalized with severe pain and it has been determined, that Charlie is going to need major surgery in what is called “Total Pancreatectomy with Islet Autotransplantation” (TPIAT). This is major, major surgery. So much is involved. This is a 14-16 hour surgery, where Charlie could remain in the hospital for at least two months. Charlie’s surgery will be done at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, OH, so Ellen will need to basically live several hours from their home while he has this surgery and recovery. This is where the “village” comes in. I am asking for your help. Any amount you are able to donate will add up to help in a profound way to cover medical expenses/recovery expenses while they navigate this difficult time. This is going to be very costly, and Ellen, though she has still been working to support them both, will not be able to do so – at least not for quite some time. The surgery is tentatively scheduled for September 9, 2025. If you can give any amount, please consider doing so. There is no one more deserving. If you are not able to help monetarily, please spread the word, share, and re-share this page far and wide, and most importantly, keep Charlie and Ellen in your prayers. I may change the amount of our goal, as needed, as this plays out. From the bottom of my heart, thank you family, friends, and friends’ of friends. Charlie has a difficult road ahead and needs us all right now. Please take a moment and see what he will be going through. The surgery is complicated and the recovery is extensive as well.
